The undeniable sign that spring is coming

Other people have been boasting that their asparagus is sprouting and I was getting a little green-eyed. Today I noticed it here – two sizable spears, which will be the first harvests from my asparagus bed. I think they are old enough to handle a light harvest this year.

Now what will I make with them?

  1. I hesitate to admit it but I’ve never really enjoyed asparagus – there I’ve said it, but I feel slightly less of a foodie…

    • Well I wish I didn’t have to devote permanent space to it, so maybe that isn’t a bad thing Liz. Personally I adore it, especially with hollandaise sauce – drool!

  2. Very envy! I’ve just sown some Asparagus seeds and have no idea when will I get a return of my investment?

    • Yvonne, I planted these adparagus from seed in early 2011, so as early as 18 months if you are lucky, but normally 2-3 years. If you want a faster yield you are better off planting crowns, which are available by mail order or nurseries.
